In those days homosexuality was an offence punished with jail time. There was a signalman in the royal navy who was gay and he said "as soon as left port homosexuality as an offence ceased to exist, it was rampant. I had two friends of mine on a cruiser and they said there was twelve of them on that ship and they were having the time of their lives and they said to me oh you poor queen you're on that ship all on your own and I replied I'm not complaining".
